Honest answer for new oil painters
You don't need all 46 colours. Start with this limited 8:
- Titanium White (high covering)
- Yellow Ochre + Cadmium Red Hue + Burnt Umber + Ultramarine Blue (the classical four-tube limited palette — you can mix nearly anything)
- Phthalo Blue + Phthalo Green + Cadmium Yellow Light (modern vibrant additions)
- Ivory Black or Mars Black (use sparingly — most painters avoid pure black)
Add more colours as your work tells you what's missing.
What pairs with this
Oil painting needs: oil-specific bristle brushes (synthetic or hog), Mont Marte canvases (Double Thick recommended for the heavier oil paint loads), a gesso primer for raw surfaces, and palette knives for mixing and applying. For NZ beginners we also stock Mont Marte H2O water-mixable oils as a no-solvent alternative.
Frequently asked questions
How long does oil paint take to dry?
Touch-dry in 1–3 days for thin layers, 3–7 days for moderate. Fully cured at 6–12 months. Auckland winter humidity adds 20–40% to all drying times.
What surface do I paint on?
Always paint on a primed surface — stretched canvas, canvas board, or gesso-primed wood. Raw canvas or paper will rot from the linseed oil over time.
What's the "fat over lean" rule?
Each layer must be "fatter" (more oil-rich) than the layer below. Start with thin paint and a tiny bit of medium; add more oil medium as you build layers. Otherwise the top dries first, the bottom keeps shrinking, and the painting cracks within a year.
Can I use Mont Marte oils with water?
Not these — Mont Marte Premium Oils are traditional oil-based and need linseed oil or mineral spirits as a medium. For water-cleanup, look at the Mont Marte H2O Oil Paint range.
Do I need solvents to clean brushes?
Yes for traditional oils — odourless mineral spirits work. Wipe excess paint on paper towel, swirl in solvent until paint releases, then wash with brush soap or Sunlight dish soap.
Do you ship NZ-wide?
Yes — from Manukau, Auckland. Tracked courier 1–3 business days. Free NZ shipping over $75. Free local pickup from 14 Bairds Road.
