Mont Marte Signature Woodless Charcoal Pencils are made of charcoal right through, with a lacquer coating so your fingers stay cleaner and the pencil has a solid, weighty feel. Because there's no wood, you can use the side of the pencil as well as the point.

The three grades

• Soft: the darkest blacks, for deep shadows and bold marks.
• Medium: the everyday grade for building up tone.
• Hard: lighter, crisper lines for detail and early sketching.

How to use them

• Hold the pencil on its side for broad strokes and quick shading over big areas.
• Use a sharpened point for fine detail.
• Lift out highlights with a kneadable eraser.

Sharpening

Don't use a regular pencil sharpener on charcoal or pastel pencils. Use a sharp hobby knife (under adult supervision), working slowly away from yourself at a slight angle. For a finer point, use a sandpaper block or fine sandpaper: press gently, move the point back and forth, and turn the pencil as you go so each side sharpens evenly.
