Kraft paper gives you a mid-tone to start from, which changes how you draw. Put your shadows in with charcoal or a dark pencil, then pick out the highlights with white charcoal, white pastel or a white gel pen. Portraits and still life come off the page quickly this way, and it's a good exercise in seeing light.

It's handy for craft jobs too: folded cards, gift tags and labels with that brown-paper-parcel look.

Tips

• White and light coloured pencils show up best when you press firmly. Light layers sink into the brown.
• Spray charcoal and pastel drawings with fixative before you close the pad, so they don't smudge onto the next page.
