Mont Marte Silicone Oil: Acrylic Pour Magic
60ml of silicone oil for making cells in acrylic pour paintings.
Silicone oil is what most pourers add to get cells, the round, lacy gaps that open up in the paint as it settles. It's transparent, so it won't change your colours, and it comes in a 60ml easy-pour bottle.
How to use it
- Mix your pouring paint first.
- Add silicone oil at no more than 2 to 3 teaspoons per 200ml of pouring paint. Stir gently, just a few turns, so the oil stays in small droplets.
- Pour onto your canvas and tilt slowly to spread the paint.
- Pass a blow torch quickly over the surface to bring up the cells. Keep the flame moving and don't hold it in one spot.
Before you varnish
Silicone oil leaves a film on the surface. Once the painting is completely dry, clean the oil off before you varnish, otherwise the varnish won't sit evenly. Mont Marte's advice is simple: don't varnish until the silicone oil has been cleaned off.
