How to use air-hardening clay
- Knead the clay for 30 seconds to soften it.
- Shape your piece. Keep clay covered with a damp cloth between work sessions so it doesn't dry out.
- For larger pieces, build over a wire or foil armature for strength.
- Smooth the surface with a damp finger or sponge before drying.
- Let dry uncovered for 24–48 hours (longer for thicker pieces).
- Once fully dry, sand, paint and seal with acrylic varnish.
Tips for a strong dry piece
- Keep walls roughly even — uneven thickness causes cracking.
- For pieces over 5 cm thick, hollow out the centre or build over an armature.
- Don't force-dry near a heater — slow even drying is what gives strength.
- Wrap unfinished work in a damp cloth + plastic bag and it stays workable for days.
Air-dry clay vs polymer clay — which is right for you?
Use air-dry clay for larger pieces, sculpture, school projects, kids' craft, and anything where you don't want to use the oven. Use polymer clay for fine detail, jewellery, small pieces where you need maximum hardness, and projects with strong colours. Full comparison guide here.
Pairs well with
Most air-dry clay buyers also need modelling tools for shaping and detail work, plus Mont Marte acrylic paint for finishing. Starters should look at our Polymer Clay starter kit or grab the Air-Dry Clay sculpting kit for tools + tutorials in one box.
Frequently asked questions
How long does air-hardening clay take to dry?
Touch-dry in 4–6 hours, fully cured in 24–48 hours. Thicker pieces and humid weather both add time. The clay turns slightly lighter and feels cool when it's fully dry.
Is air-dry clay safe for kids?
Yes — Mont Marte Air Hardening Clay is non-toxic and safe for school and home use. No oven, no kiln, no sharp tools needed for shaping.
Can you paint air-dry clay after it sets?
Yes — acrylic, poster and watercolour paint all work well. Seal the finished piece with a coat of acrylic varnish or diluted PVA for extra durability.
Will air-dry clay crack as it dries?
Cracking usually means the piece is too thick in places, dried too fast (near a heater), or has uneven wall thickness. Build with even walls, dry slowly at room temperature, and small surface cracks can be smoothed with a damp finger before fully dry.
Can air-dry clay get wet?
Once fully cured, light handling and brief contact with water is fine. For a piece that will see moisture (a bowl, garden ornament), seal it thoroughly with acrylic varnish — air-dry clay is NOT food-safe or fully waterproof.
How much clay do I need for a small sculpture?
A 500 g block is enough for a hand-sized sculpture, a small bowl, or several kids' projects. For a bust or medium sculpture, plan on 1–2 blocks.
Do you ship modelling clay NZ-wide?
