Thickens acrylic paint so it holds texture, ridges and brush marks.

Mont Marte Impasto is a clear-drying medium you mix straight into acrylic paint. It bulks the paint up so knife marks and thick strokes stay where you put them, and because it dries clear it doesn't change your colour. Clean up with water.

What you get

  • 500ml tub of Mont Marte Impasto medium
  • Water-based, dries clear

Best for

  • Textured acrylic paintings and palette knife work
  • Raised areas like waves, foliage and heavy skies
  • A textured underlayer you paint over with oils once it's dry

How to use

  1. Put your acrylic on the palette and work some Impasto in with a palette knife. Mont Marte doesn't give a set ratio, so start with a small amount and add more until the paint holds the shape you want.
  2. Apply with a palette knife or a stiff brush.
  3. Leave it to dry properly. Thick layers take a lot longer than normal acrylic, so for very deep texture we'd build it up in two or three goes rather than one heavy layer.

Good to know

  • It's water-based, so it can't be mixed with oil paint. You can paint over it with oils once it's dry.
  • Heavy texture is best on a firm surface such as a canvas panel or a tight stretched canvas. A palette knife set makes it much easier to work.
