What each one does in watercolour: the Wash 16 lays in skies and big backgrounds. The flats give clean edges, buildings and blocks of colour. The brights are flats with shorter hair, so they're firmer for lifting colour and short, controlled strokes. The Round 4 handles lines, small leaves and detail.

Pony hair is soft and holds a good amount of water. It doesn't spring back to a fine point the way sable or a good synthetic does, so it suits looser work and learning.

7pc or 5pc?

Pick the 7pc if you paint landscapes, buildings and hard-edged shapes. The 5pc set has two rounds and a mop, which suits flowers and loose, soft washes.
